In January 2025, the classrooms of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, buzzed with a unique kind of energy—not from electric lights or ceiling fans, but from the bright and curious minds of children eager to understand the world around them. FINISH Mondial's pilot program on climate change awareness for children witnessed enthusiastic participation from 142 students. But this was more than just another school event; it marked the beginning of a movement led by children, for the planet.
The session began with a heartwarming exchange that captured the essence of the initiative. A child raised his hand and asked team member Ms. Saroj, “Ma’am, लेकिन वो तो पेड़ काट रहे हैं, हम कहते हैं तो वो मानते नहीं।” Before she could respond, another student confidently replied, “अगर वो पेड़ काट रहे हैं तो हम लगाएंगे।” The room echoed with nods and a shared determination—these were not just children; they were future changemakers.
The session opened with an icebreaking activity that involved coloring and exploring posters about nature, pollution, and sustainability. These visual aids caught the children’s attention and made the complex issue of climate change more relatable. The session quickly turned interactive, as the team engaged students in discussions, asked questions, and listened as children committed to actions like planting more trees and conserving electricity by turning off lights when not in use.
This is why introducing climate change to children is not just important—it is urgent. Today’s children are growing up in a world experiencing rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, and degrading ecosystems. When they ask why the summers are hotter, or why rains come late, they aren’t just asking questions—they’re beginning to understand. And this understanding can spark lifelong action.
Recognizing the importance of nurturing this awareness early, FINISH Mondial has developed a well-structured, two-phase school intervention model. The content for each session is carefully designed based on the age and comprehension level of the students, and participants are divided into three groups: Class 1–4, 5–8, and 9–12.
In the first session, held in collaboration with the education department, the FINISH team delivers engaging presentations using age-appropriate slides, interactive discussions, and activities that explain climate change, its causes, and everyday actions that can help mitigate it. At the end of the session, students are assigned a task or activity—ranging from drawing posters, planting saplings, preparing small plays, or conducting energy audits at home—and their teachers are requested to guide them in completing these assignments over the next 15 days.
When the team returns for the second session, they review the tasks completed by students. Based on their creativity, effort, and understanding, a select group of students is recognized as “Young Climate Champions.” These champions are then entrusted with promoting climate-related actions in their schools and communities—organizing awareness rallies, encouraging waste segregation, planting trees, and even engaging parents in climate discussions.
Importantly, this is not a one-time activity. The FINISH team follows up regularly with these Young Climate Champions, providing mentorship, addressing their doubts, and supporting their school-level activities. This sustained engagement ensures that climate education becomes part of the school ecosystem.
All of this is done with the full support and necessary permissions from district and state education departments, ensuring the program is institutionally supported and aligned with government educational goals.
To date, FINISH Mondial has reached over 5,500 children across more than 70 schools in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar through this initiative. These aren’t just numbers—they’re seeds of hope planted in young minds. As these children learn, they influence their peers, families, and communities, creating a ripple effect of awareness and action.
Because when a child learns to care for the planet, they don’t just change their own habits—they inspire a whole generation. Through education, we’re empowering them to lead us to a cleaner, greener, and more resilient tomorrow.
